JAN: A cute boy called Rob waved back at me in Christian Connection (CC), we swapped emails a few weeks later, followed by many email exchanges.
FEB: We took the plunge on exchanging phone numbers and started texting. I laughed so much each time he told me about his day and his computer problems, password wasn't working etc., which wasn't quite daily but a lot of the time :-) We talked about our Sunday worship, watching The Chosen series, or just what we had to eat that day. Things went very well and we decided it was time to meet F2F but not so fast! I needed to know that the cute boy in that photo (unsure when it was taken) is still cute indeed. After a short video call, we agreed to go on our first dinner date on the 11th. The rest, as they say, is history (or herstory).
Planning a surprise proposal for someone who notices everything around her - never misses a trick, someone who needs to be fully involved in every decision - poses a unique set of challenges. It had to be a surprise, spontaneous yet seamless plan. Many trips to the hotel concierge to arrange the logistics with wonderful staff who nevertheless never grasped the idea of discretion was at times comical. Eventually, the scene was set.
We chilled on our terrace overlooking the Indian Ocean on the paradise island of Lombok against a magnificent blood-orange setting sun. With a flourish, I produced a bottle of vintage bubbly, poured two glasses and sank to one knee to pop the question..to which I heard the immortal words... "is this a proper proposal"? Crestfallen!! She did of course follow it up with a 'Yes'. Nailed it!
